2 Corinthians 6:14-15, Unequally Yoked
14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?
Paul is not talking about marriage or dating! He is talking about attendance at idol feasts and pagan temple rituals and the Corinthians joining with the false apostles. We as Christians are not to enter into voluntary partnerships or associations where others would significantly influence the direction and outcome of our moral decisions and spiritual activities. Paul has dealt with the internal obstacles to reconciliation. Now he turns to some external, presenting factors. He will move from lesser to greater problems.
Belial is a name for Satan not found elsewhere in the Old or New Testaments. It was used, however, by the Jews in Paul’s day. It is derived from one of Satan’s characteristics, namely that he is “worthless” or “treacherous.” The point is that Satan is an opponent of God, so Christ has no relationship with him. Paul does not want his converts in Corinth joining with his unbelieving opponents.
Reflection:
Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no unworthy affection may drag downwards. Give me an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out. Give me an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know thee, diligence to seek thee, wisdom to find thee, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
