John 12:9-11, The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
The miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead brings two different kinds of responses. All those who have suffered because of loss are coming to see the one who has come back from the dead. In Lazarus they can see and touch living evidence that leads to faith in Jesus.
The other response is that of the chief priests, who add Lazarus to their short list of those they want dead. Like Jesus, Lazarus needs to be taken out because his living flesh is evidence of the power of Jesus. If they can only remove all evidence of Jesus and his influence, perhaps they can hold onto their power, privilege, and position.
I sometimes wonder, if these men had actually killed Lazarus, do you think Jesus would have brought him back to life again? Lazarus is a walking miracle and evidence to the power of Jesus and a marked man. Jesus saves Lazarus from death but immediately death stares him back in the face. Something tells me death did not scare him, for Lazarus himself was proof that God has power over death.
Lord Jesus, help us know who and where we are in you. Equip us through your Spirit to live as flesh and blood witnesses to your amazing power and grace. Amen.
