John 18:22-24, Jesus is Struck

22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Jesus’ refusal to answer Annas and show him deference arouses an angry and illegal slap across the face from one of his officers, which is only the beginning of the illegal torture Jesus will endure in the next twelve or so hours. Jesus is calling for a just trial. Call witnesses, follow due process, do not force or manipulate false admissions. If the Jewish leaders are to put God on trial, they should follow the Law.

Consider the gravity of what is going on—Jesus is on trial for his incarnation, teaching, and prophetic utterances. God has made himself known in the fullest measure to his people, and they are rejecting him. Unable to outmaneuver Jesus, Annas decides to send him to his son-in-law Caiaphas, the high priest and head of the Sanhedrin, the council of Jewish leaders.

Father, help us in our weaknesses not to miss the things of you, especially of your revelation in your Son, Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen.
