John 2:17, Zeal
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."
Have you ever been horrified by a misrepresentation of the truth by someone who should know better? Worse yet, by someone who did it to make an unjust profit? Bernie Madoff comes to mind. He made an illegal fortune off others by his scheming misrepresentation of reality.
The misrepresentation of the truth and honor of God drove Jesus to cleanse the temple. This led his disciples to remember this verse from Psalm 69 about being consumed by zeal. The temple reflected to the world the nature of God, and the reflection presented a face other than God’s. Jesus came to present the truth, and what he found at the temple was a lie. He had to set this straight because his reputation and the meaning of his death would be misunderstood.
What truth consumes you? Is there something you cannot keep quiet about but will move to action when you see a blatant misrepresentation? Is this truth in alignment with God? These are great questions to ponder. Think about them today in the presence of God and ask him to correct you where correction is needed and to move you into action when and where you need to be moved.
