John 3:2, Rabbi
2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."
Nicodemus calls Jesus “Rabbi,” which means teacher, a term of utmost respect, coming from someone in his position. Why does Nicodemus treat Jesus this way? It appears it is not Jesus’ teaching in and of itself; rather, it is the signs that command Nicodemus’ respect and interest.
This is no ordinary person who comes to Jesus. He is Israel’s chief Rabbi. As a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus is likely the most respected Rabbi in Jerusalem and all of Israel. Here he submits himself to Jesus. Symbolically, the Old Covenant is submitting itself to the New Covenant to learn how it can and will survive now that the Messiah has arrived. The Old has recognized the New, even though the understanding is limited.
Coming by night means Nicodemus is on unofficial business. He does not officially represent the corrupted leadership but symbolizes the heart and soul of the Old Covenant that is waiting for the Messiah and the fulfillment of all God’s promises. Jesus’ explanation of what will proceed—how it will happen and why—is couched in mysterious intrigue. Jesus is not ready to reveal everything in the day light.
Ask God to help you bring your relationship with Jesus into the light for all to see, so that you can live in a relationship that witnesses to him.
