John 3:20-21, Come to the Light
20 “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night in the darkness. He came to the Light to listen to and learn from him. Perhaps these last two verses are acknowledging the conversion of Nicodemus. When we encounter him again in chapters 7 and 19, we find his support of Jesus growing. He even takes the dead body of Jesus from the cross, covers it in spices, and helps bury him, putting his life and reputation at risk in Jerusalem. That day Nicodemus must have fully understood what Jesus had said to him: “Whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Being born again separates Christians from non-Christians. We either come to the light as sinners and receive forgiveness or remain in the darkness, needing Jesus’ love. When we do come to Jesus, one of the great realizations we will have is that it has been the work of the Holy Spirit to bring us to him. It has been the Holy Spirit all along giving us a new heart, cleaning us up, and opening our eyes to a new day, a new life with Jesus.
Consider where God has carried out his works in you and thank him in prayer.
