34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
Today’s verse describes the relationship of the Trinity. “Trinity” is a word Christians devised to describe how the Bible describes the relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. When Jesus speaks, God speaks. Jesus speaks the very words of God because the Spirit fills him completely. Jesus and the Father are bound together by the love that is the Spirit.
In the Old Testament, there is no giving of the Spirit without measure. The Spirit comes upon people to accomplish the purposes of God, but the Spirit does not remain as he does with Jesus. John the baptizer is filled with the Spirit, yet not as Jesus is filled, placing John among the Old Testament prophets. In fact, he is the last of the Old Testament prophets, who stood in the council of God and reported back to people what God had told him. Now God himself is present in Jesus, speaking directly to people without the need of a prophet. John will decrease because Jesus utters the very words of the Father.
When you read the words of Jesus, do you understand them to be the very words of God? Pray to the Lord to help you hear his voice in Scripture and respond to him in faith and obedience.
