John 3:25-28, Exalting Christ

25 Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him." 27 John answered, "A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.'”

We saw the potential rivalry building yesterday between two great men both preaching about the kingdom of God and baptizing those who respond. Now John’s disciples get drawn into a controversy with a certain unnamed person, and their discussion moves from purification to the success of Jesus’ ministry and its negative impact on John’s. (Purification is a theme running throughout this gospel.)

This is a test for John. How will he respond as a leader of a movement of God? He diffuses the situation immediately by refocusing his disciples on God. First, he acknowledges that both his and Jesus’ ministries come from heaven. God is sovereign and raises up people for his purposes. Second, John states who he is and who he is not. He came first to prepare for Jesus. With Jesus on the scene, the Messiah must have the greater ministry.

John’s response is an example for all of us. In the middle of conflict, he turns to God and then turns others to God. God’s will must be followed and obeyed. The human desire for personal success, honor, and recognition leads to sinful rivalry with the potential to abandon the mission of God. John refocuses on Jesus—the response his disciples must make as well.

Is there a conflict or rivalry in your life? In prayer, turn to Jesus and focus on him.
