John 3:31-33, Bearing Witness to Jesus
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
John the baptizer contrasts himself with Jesus. Jesus is from heaven, having come to the earth from the very heart of God. John is of the earth. He is earth (dust) and will return to the earth (dust). Jesus is the eternal Word of God. God called John to bear witness to Jesus. John fasted and prayed to enter into the presence of God. Jesus came from the very presence of God. He reveals the truth of God as no one else can.
John fully understands his place and his mission to point to the preeminence of the Messiah as God incarnate, the Word Made Flesh. Jesus is the testimony of what God has done, is doing, and will do for us, and John bears witness to that testimony.
Is Jesus above everything else in your life? Pray to him today, acknowledging his preeminence in your life.
