Knowing The Word in Genesis 29:31-35, Jacob's Bench of Players Expands
31 When the Lord saw [he acts in defense of the weak and oppressed] that Leah was hated [worse than being not loved as much as Rachel], he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren [like Sarah and Rebekah]. [Again we see children are a gift from the Lord.] 32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben [sounds like “see a son”], for she said, “Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.” 33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon [“to hear”]. 34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will be attached to me [apparently having sons has not caused Jacob to love her], because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi [“attached/joined”]. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name Judah [praise or “He shall be praised”]. Then she ceased bearing. [Why? Has one of them ceased from marital intercourse? Has God shut her womb? We don’t know.]
