Knowing The Word in Genesis 6:5-8, Wickedness

5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [The Bible tells us that sin has its origin in the thought world. Verse 5 asserts humanity’s depravity since every thought is essentially evil from its beginning.] 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth [because of the depth of sin], and it grieved him to his heart [with bitter regret]. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” [Genesis reasserts the enormous danger of sin and human moral independence. Not only is it self-destructive, but it is hateful to God and attracts his judgment of death.] 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. [There is a glimmer of hope. “To find favor” means someone in authority helps someone without status. It is the same phrase used of Moses in Exodus 33:17. This puts Noah on a par with Moses as one of the greatest saints of the old covenant and leads us to believe that he will escape the coming judgment. He alone will be saved while all that God has created will be destroyed and returned to a watery chaos before a new start can be made. In a sense it is the anti or reverse story of the crucifixion of Jesus.]
