Knowing The Word in Luke 11:33-36

The Light in You

11:33 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Comments

Jesus is speaking metaphorically. His meaning is that when one’s eyes work, one can perform almost any bodily function. But when one’s eyes are impaired, other bodily functions are impaired as well. Our eyes are to be fixed on what is good and not on what is evil. We are to take care not to corrupt what is good in us.

What is the best way to do this? First, we need to worship God constantly and nothing else. Second, prayer and the study of God’s word helps keep us focused on what is good. And third, being part of the fellowship of believers is critical for our health. Christians cannot go it alone. We were not made that way.

Application

Looking at the three ways above to help you not corrupt what is good in you, where are you doing well and where do you need some help? Make a plan and share it with someone who will help you stay accountable.

Prayer

God, as you are perfect in your Trinity of being, help me to be in constant fellowship with you as I grow in faith and understanding, and as I increase my fellowship and understanding of others. I do not want to stay the same but to grow more and more in the likeness of Christ.
