Knowing The Word in Luke 20:41-22

Whose Son Is the Christ?

20:41 But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David's son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 43 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

Comments

By quoting from the beginning of Psalm 110, Jesus was clearing up a misunderstanding of Messiahship. (“Christ” means “Messiah”.) Jesus wanted them (and us) to see that the Messiah is not David’s son in the sense of being a warrior king like David, who created Israel’s great kingdom. But in writing this psalm, David saw the Messiah as Lord of the people’s hearts and lives, a man who would be far greater than another David. David would never call one of his descendants Lord unless that descendant was more than human.

Application

Read Psalm 110 today and meditate upon it. You may need to use a study Bible to help you understand its meaning. It is one of the “messianic psalms” that point to Jesus.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are both king and priest, the one who fulfills both roles inaugurated by God to point to you. In you I have become part of your kingdom of priests to serve you forever.
