Jesus Again Foretells His Death

9:43b But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Comments

When reading the gospels, we need to understand that on the other side of the cross, it must have been darn near impossible for the disciples to understand Jesus’ approaching death. We read with the knowledge of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The disciples did not have that benefit until after the fact, and then they had to work to make sense of it with the help of the resurrected Jesus, as we shall see when we get to chapter 24.

A question we may ask is “who concealed the understanding of the death of Jesus from the disciples?” Apparently, it was God. He did not want the disciples to prevent the death of Jesus.

Application

At times we do not fully understand things, especially in regard to matters of faith. And then it is as if a light comes on, and things make sense. Are there matters of faith that make little or no sense to you? Ask God about these matters and dare him to answer you.

In prayer, ask God a question, and then wait quietly for a response.
