Matthew 11:1-6, Messengers from John the Baptist

1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

Why would John ask such an unbelieving question of Jesus? John’s career had ended in disaster. Imprisoned, John likely expected Jesus would have him released as he had released people from demons, illnesses, and even death. Jesus’ career would end in disaster as well, only Jesus’ death would bring salvation that John’s death could not. Jesus never promised those who followed God’s will that they would have their best lives in the here and now. He asked his followers to remain faithful and patient in their suffering.

Prayer

As clouds conceal the moon and stars and heavy rain the road ahead, the dark happenings in life, my Jesus, veil your face. But through patient prayer and your holy Word, though I stumble in the dark, I still hold your hand and walk the path you have set out for me.
