Matthew 13:51-52, New and Old Treasures
51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”
Comments
Earlier the disciples had asked Jesus for an explanation to his parables. Now he asks if they have learned and understand. These scribes are his trained disciples, not the Jewish scribes who are outside the kingdom. Jesus challenges them to a new role of teaching. Jesus’ teachings are the new treasure. While new and revolutionary, they are grounded in the eternal truth of God, and are now being brought fully into the light.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
