Matthew 24:32-35, The Lesson of the Fig Tree

32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

These verses have confounded Christians throughout the centuries as to their exact meaning. I do not bring much more clarification except to say that Jesus gives warning of the distress that ultimately leads to the sacking of Jerusalem. That does not mean that with the fall of Jerusalem the distress previously mentioned will cease, but there will be difficult times during the lives of his disciples as judgment is brought upon Israel and the generation responsible for the death of Jesus.

Prayer

To thee, then O Jesus, do I turn my true and last end. Thou art the river of life which alone can satisfy my thirst. Without thee all else is barren and void. Without all else thou alone art enough for me. Thou art the Redeemer of those that are lost; the sweet Consoler of the sorrowful; the crown of glory for the victors; the recompense of the blessed. One day I hope to receive of thy fullness, and to sing the song of praise in my true home. Give me only on earth some few drops of consolation, and I will patiently wait thy coming that I may enter into the joy of the Lord.

(Bonaventure, 1221-1274)
