Matthew 6:16-18, Fasting
16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Fasting was a prominent element in Jewish life. People fasted for major festivals. Strict Pharisees fasted twice a week, making sure others knew it. Jesus assumed fasting would continue with his disciples, but he did not want them to make a show of it because the heart of fasting is denial of earthly pleasure to allow more time with the Father.
Fasting is not a common spiritual discipline today. Consider a time of fasting by giving up something that will help you focus that time on God, drawing you closer to him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I want to spend more time devoted to you this week. Lead me into a time of fasting that I may give something up and devote more of myself to you.
