Matthew 7:15-20, A Tree and Its Fruit
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

There is an ethical test for discovering false prophets. We should see Jesus in their words and actions combined. Talk is cheap. When change is real, there is not just chit-chat about faith but a fruitful new life in Christ.
False prophets can bring destruction to churches. This happens every day. This is one reason why God wants us praying for our leaders at all levels in the church.
Prayer
Almighty and everlasting God, from whom comes every good and perfect gift: Send down upon our bishops, priests, and deacons, and upon the congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of your grace: and, that they may truly please you, pour upon them the continual dew of your blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honor of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
